The Story of Shona Sculpture

"Zimbabwe" — from the Shona word dzimbadzamabwe, meaning 'house of stone.'

Zimbabwe is the only country on the African continent with large deposits of serpentine stone suitable for sculpting. The Shona people have been hand-carving this stone into art for nearly a thousand years — long before the craft gained international recognition.

The stone comes in a remarkable range of colours: deep black, forest green, warm yellows and oranges, grey, red, and even purple. Each piece is shaped by hand, making every sculpture entirely unique — both in the sculptor's expression and in the natural patterns formed in the rock millions of years ago.

The Great Zimbabwe settlement — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site — stands as testament to these ancestors' mastery. Built between the 11th and 15th centuries, its towers and enclosures were constructed without a single drop of mortar, using hand-hewn granite blocks fitted together with extraordinary precision.

Today's sculptors at Mangwanani Art Gallery carry that same spirit forward. The themes they sculpt — family, love, life, nature, and the animals of Zimbabwe — reflect the enduring values of Shona culture.
